How to Make Your 2013 Fitness Resolution a Reality with Team Fitness

Many times we go into the New Year with the highest expectations. To make this the year to shed that extra 15-20 pounds, stick with an exercise regimen, eat the healthiest diet and keep as an incentive to lose weight, all those clothes in the back of your closet that are too tight. So what makes this year any different? Well on the journey to make 2013 a year of losing weight, let Team Fitness help you change your mindset from weight loss to healthy lifestyle. Instead of trying out a crash diet, begin to think of making better choices when it comes to what you eat and where you train. The last thing you want to do is tackle every part of your lifestyle and overwhelm or deprive yourself. This is when many resolutions crash and burn before any results are even seen.

And what makes our ‘training programs’ a reality, is that we are the only personal training studio that currently offers services and products such as our meal plan and “90 days to a new you” program. And since we are most flexible, affordable and reliable personal training studio in North Vancouver, we are helping more and more people lose weight safer and quicker – all within 12 simple weeks.

Take it one day at a time. Begin with trying to find time to exercise. If you rarely exercise, start with a commitment to try and work out 2 days a week. Once you form the habit of working out twice a week, try to find one more day you can fit a class or work out in. If you are already exercising on a consistent basis, consider changing up your workouts. The body will become immune to the same routine so if you are a runner, try a boot camp class which will help with, strength, flexibility and core stability. Most importantly, you want to find a class or a form of exercise that you can enjoy. If you can enjoy your workouts, you are 100 times more likely to stick with it!

BUDDY WEEK! bring a friend for free at Team Fitness!

So often, we revolve our social meetings around food instead of exercise. Rather than meeting a friend for lunch once a week, why not take a class together at the gym or invest in some partner training? Plan to walk with your spouse every night after dinner or meet your brother or sister for a game of tennis instead of a meal. All of these changes can save you time, money, and calories.

Think of the money and calories you’ll save by not eating out. Exercising together will allow you to build stronger relationships with the people you care about, while saving time in your day by doing it together.

So where is the place to start you ask?

November 19th - December 7th

Why not try it out for free at Team Fitness during our FREE "Buddy Week"

What is the Buddy Week you ask?

The Buddy week allows you to train for free (for up to 7 days) with a friend or loved one who is currently a client or member at Team Fitness.

What does the buddy week entitle me to use?

All Facilities – With your 7 day pass, you can use all the facilities our Team Fitness studio has to offer, which mainly includes our partner training and boot camp classes.
All Classes – you’ll have access to take part in any of our boot camps 7 days a week!

How do I register for the buddy week?

You must be booked in first and you must fill out a health questionaire before taking part in any training or phyiscal activity at Team Fitness. In some cases a doctor's note may be required before exercising.

You must have a friend or loved one that is currently training at Team Fitness and is willing to train along side you before you can register. Once that is confirmed all you need to do is call us on 604-990-3476 or email us at info@teamfitness.ca to activate your free week pass.

Please note that in order to use your free pass you must have arranged your dates prior to arriving at Team Fitness. Please call or email to confirm dates.

The benefits of exercising with a partner or in a group at Team Fitness

Cost- Partner training is actually more affordable than personal training by yourself. The bigger the group, the more affordable it becomes. FACT.

Safety—With someone else watching your form and being there to spot you when you need it, you’ll exercise more safely than if you were alone.

Quality time—We spend most of our time caught up in our careers and other responsibilities. Instead of hitting the gym alone, plan a workout time that fits the schedule of you and your spouse/friend. You’ll reach your fitness goals without sacrificing that important one-on-one time.

A common interest—Add exercise to your list of shared interests and hobbies. The possibilities for new, unique activities are endless.

Motivation and support—Getting encouragement and praise from your friend/spouse is one of the best motivators. It’ll help both of you to remain consistent and inspired.

A deeper bond—Exercise produces chemicals in the brain that evoke feelings of happiness, which in turn reduce stress.

Respect and pride—Taking care of your body and your health shows the people you care about that you want to be your best and that you want to be around for years to come.

Balance—One of you may tend to favor cardio while the other tends to favor strength training, for example. By working out together, you can balance your workout program to include more of both. Let your partner teach you about the areas of fitness you’re unsure of and be open to new exercises.

What to do:

Choose a workout that allows you both to work at your own intensity level. Group classes or partner training allows each participant to cater the workout to their fitness level, so you both get the workout you want.

At the gym, simply pick two cardio machines next to each other and work toward your individual goals. You’ll be together, but can each work at your own speed, intensity, incline and resistance level.

When walking or jogging outside, try intervals. If you are a slow jogger and your buddy is faster, intervals can be great for both of you. Work at one partner’s faster pace for a few minutes and then recover at the other person’s slower pace. Intervals are also a great way to improve your fitness level and speed over time. Better yet, stop at a park along the way and do some pushups or crunches to add more variety and intensity into your intervals.

Enjoy the great outdoors. Create a more active lifestyle by picking up new hobbies. While these may not always count as traditional cardio or strength training, every bit of activity you do will benefit your body and your health. Hiking, canoeing, playing Frisbee, cycling, rafting or just enjoying a nice walk at the end of the day—all of these are better than hours spent sitting in front of the TV.

Add strength training. A medicine ball, band and body weight are all you need to have a fun and challenging workout with your partner. For example: squats with a medicine ball toss to your partner. This will work your legs, arms and core, get your heart rate up and help keep your mind off the fact that you are working out.

What Is Flax Seed Oil And What Are The Benefits?

What is Flax Seed Oil and how can it benefit me? I was faced with this question when I started hearing about Flax Seed not long ago. It's become a 'buzz word' in society and seems to be making great strides in increased health for many. I wanted to join that wagon of wellness and so I researched until I felt satisfied that it could help me, too. Here are my findings:

Flax Seed Oil is a blue flowering plant that is grown on the Western Canadian Prairies for its oil rich seeds. This natural oil (also known as Linseed Oil) is highly recommended for the general well being and whole body nutrition and is considered to be nature's richest source of omega-3 fatty acids that are required for the health of almost all body systems.

Flax Seed Oil contains omega-6 and omega-9 essential fatty acids, B vitamins, potassium, lecithin, magnesium, fiber, protein, and zinc and also provides approximately 50% more omega-3 oils than what you could get from taking fish oil, minus that horrible "fishy" after taste. Sounded good to me already!

Should you add flax seed oil to your diet?

Some nutritionists, researchers, and scientists believe that it could be the most important health-promoting supplement next to a multi-vitamin. Nearly every system in the body can benefit from flax seed oil's natural properties, including the cardiovascular system, immune system, circulatory system, reproductive system, nervous system, as well as joints.

Just look at this list of facts and studies of what Flax Seed Oil can and may accomplish:

  • Research shows low incidence of breast cancer and colon cancer in populations that have high amounts of lignan in their diet. Flax is 100 times richer in lignan than most whole grains.
  • Studies show that Omega-3 fatty acids help lower cholesterol and blood triglycerides, and prevent clots in arteries, which may result in strokes, heart attacks and thromboses.
  • Helps protect the body against high blood pressure, inflammation, water retention, sticky platelets and lowered immune function.
  •  Shortens recovery time for fatigued muscles after exertion.
  • Increases the body's production of energy and also increases stamina.
  • Accelerates the healing of sprains and bruises.
  • Eases weight loss in people afflicted with obesity.
  • Stimulates brown fat cells and increases the metabolic rate making it easier to burn off fat.
  • Improves the absorption of Calcium.
  • Strengthens finger and toenails.
  • Can improve eyesight and perception of colors.
  • Can often improve the function of the liver.
  • Can relieve the side effects and stop development of many forms of cancer.
  • Can relieve some cases of Asthma.
  • Helpful in the treatment of Eczema, Psoriasis, and Dandruff.
  • Can relieve the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis. It can relieve the symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus.
  • Can alleviate some allergies.
  • Helps prevent Atherosclerosis (the accumulation of fatty deposits inside the blood vessels, especially the large and medium-sized arteries, that many people experience during the aging process).
  • Lowers high blood pressure in Hypertension sufferers.
  • Has been scientifically proven to treat some cases of depression.
  • Can improve the mental function of many old age pensioners.
  • Can help in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.
  • Has been proven to improve the behavior of Schizophrenics.
  • Can relieve some cases of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) in females.
  • And so much more!
Unfortunately, our current diets do not come close to meeting our daily EFA (essential fatty acids) requirements. The richest sources of EFAs such as flax seeds, cold-water fish, and soy and canola oils are rarely found in our regular meals. In addition, more typical foods like red meats and egg yolks can actually encourage the body's production of bad prostaglandins. Flax Seed oil can help restore the body's natural balance of good and bad prostaglandins.

How much do I take a day?
The recommended daily dose for most people is at least 1,000 mg taken one to three times daily. Even better is adding flax seeds into your diet in breads, muffins or on salads. Scientific studies have used up to 30 grams of flax seeds a day safely and without side effects.

What do I look for when buying Flax Seed Oil?
It's important to buy high-quality flax seed oil as it is prone to rancidity. Light and oxygen will slowly breakdown the essential fatty acids. Look for flax seed oil capsules (dark coated soft gels) or oil that is bottled in amber-brown bottles, as these are more resistant to the light and oxygen. Make sure you refrigerate your flax seed oil to help extend its shelf life.

Flax seed oil takes a bit of time to be absorbed into the body before the full beneficial effects begin, ranging anywhere from a few days to as many as six weeks, depending on your overall well-being.

Add Flax Seed to your diet and watch what it will do for you! If you're unsure about trying Flax Seed, contact your physician and ask for more information.

How can protein shakes help you lose weight?

Anyone who is trying to lose weight should include protein shakes into their arsenal to fight weight loss. You can even maximize the results if you do not treat it as “the” solution. It must be a part of a complete holistic weight loss solution. In this article, we address when to drink protein shakes for effective weight loss.

Firstly, what’s in protein shakes?

Protein shakes are usually a blend of whey protein isolate and concentrate. Whey protein is entirely natural since it is a by-product of cheese and it has the highest branched chain amino acids of any natural food source. Protein shakes have become an increasingly popular supplement for both people trying to lose weight as well as those trying to build some muscles.

Do protein shakes help with weight loss?

There is not much scientific research to prove that meagerly drinking protein shakes can help you lose weight. This is especially true if your weight loss strategy is based solely on using protein shakes as a meal replacement. Many people use this strategy by replacing one or two of their meals with a protein shake.

When a dieter does this, he could inadvertently be putting his body into starvation mode as the calorie deficit may be too large. While there may be substantial early weight loss, it is seldom sustainable.

Weight loss should be approached from a holistic point of view. When you have a holistic approach to weight loss, you can definitely include protein shakes into your diet and it will help your weight loss efforts. It acts as a high quality source of protein. When coupled with a healthy diet and exercise, it is an ample source of protein for your body to build much-needed muscles.

When to drink protein shakes if you want to lose weight

You can optimize the benefits of taking whey protein if you know when to drink protein shakes. The best way to supplement with protein shakes for weight loss is by having them in between meals. Your metabolism is at its highest when you are eating meals every few hours. It is also recommended that people who are trying to lose weight should have 5-6 small meals each day.

If you have bought a protein shake which is low in carbohydrates, one shake could be approximately 150 – 200 calories. This is a great way of having a low calorie snack which will help keep your metabolism high throughout the day, and let you burn away your fat.

Protein shakes can also be an emergency meal for people who have busy schedules. Rather than missing the meal completely, you can very quickly prepare a protein shake as an emergency meal replacement.

You can use this same idea when traveling. You may find yourself having irregular meals while traveling and you can use protein shakes to fill in the void.

You could also add the protein shake into your oatmeal. This makes a very nutritious breakfast that has high quality protein as well as high quality carbohydrates. Many people suffer from abdominal bloating after eating oatmeal. Adding protein can help prevent this.

A lot of people who are on strict diets will find themselves hungry at bedtime. This can be quite a torture. A protein shake can be taken at bedtime to suppress the huger pangs. The amino acids in the protein shake may even help you get better sleep and help the release of fat burning growth hormones.

Protein shakes can be useful to those who do their exercises in the morning. This applies especially to weight training. Weight training is one of the most effective exercises for men and women if they are serious about sustainable weight loss. Having a protein shake before you start weight training can help avoid muscle catabolism which can happen when you exercise the first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This is where your body breaks down muscles instead of fat to feed your energy requirements during the exercise.

As you can see, knowing when to drink protein shakes can definitely help in getting the most out of your weight loss efforts.

What to look out for?

If you are trying to lose weight it is very important that you buy the right kind of protein shake. Many shakes have an abundance of carbohydrates in them. These are usually designed for those looking to build muscles.

You should be avoiding protein shakes which are high in carbohydrates and calories, but look out for shakes which are very low in carbohydrates. The one downside about most whey protein brands is that a lot of them contain lots of additives. It may be a good idea to look for “natural” whey protein without additives.

Protein shakes as a supplement to a healthy lifestyle

As you can see, protein shakes do have some significant benefits for people trying to build muscle or lose weight. However, it is no substitute for a good diet. You can definitely lose weight or build muscle without the help of any supplements, but supplements make life a bit easier.

There’s no need in spending a lot of money on shakes since some of them are really overpriced. If you do buy a tub of protein, avoid the expensive ones and go for one in the medium price range, you won’t notice the difference. It would also help to look for whey protein that is labeled as “natural”. These do not have additives and are sweetened with natural sweeteners such as stevia.

Protein shakes definitely have its place in a weight loss diet. You just need to know when to drink protein shakes. When taken according to the above recommendations, it can definitely boost your weight loss efforts.

Here at Team Fitness we offer you the Cleanest & Purest Whey on the Planet, New Zealand Whey!

So why use New Zealand Whey?

The New Zealand Dairy Industry is perhaps the most advanced dairy producer in the world, and this is reflected in their very high standards for product safety, environmental sustainability, and humane treatment of livestock.

One of the reasons for this high regard is that New Zealand dairies are held to some of the most stringent standards in the world. In New Zealand, the Dairy and Plant Products Group (a division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry-MAF) provides assurance to consumers, both domestic and international, that New Zealand's dairy products are safe and true to label. And, the government mandates that all dairy products must be free of antibiotics, chemical residues and hormones (rBST is illegal in New Zealand). Grazing practices, the treatment of cattle, collection and storage methods, and processing all affect the quality of whey protein. When choosing a whey protein supplement, it is important to keep these points in mind.

New Zealand is renowned as a clean and green country, with clean air, pasture and water, it's the ideal environment for dairy products. New Zealand Whey Protein comes strictly from dairy herds that are predominantly Jerseys and Holstein-Fresians which graze on healthy (pesticide-free, chemical-free) natural green grass pastures, even in winter. This all-year outdoor pasture farming results in dairy products that are acclaimed worldwide for their goodness, nutrition, energy and taste.

Choosing a Personal Trainer

If you want to lose weight, get healthy and/or build muscle, hiring a personal trainer can be a step in the right direction. A good trainer can help you set up a program that meets your goals and teach you the best way to exercise. Finding and choosing a trainer can be a little confusing and, for some, intimidating. It's not easy asking for help, but going in with more knowledge about how personal training works can make it a little easier.

What is a Personal Trainer?

A personal trainer should be, at the least, educated and certified through a reputable fitness organization (see below). This person's job is to assess your fitness level, figure out what your goals are (or help you set goals) set up a program and keep you motivated. He or she will push you past your comfort level--something difficult to do on your own. A trainer also provides:

•Guidance on reaching your goals

•Education about strength training, cardio and basic nutrition

•A reason to show up at the gym each week

•Accountability

•Aays to help track your progress

What is a Session Like?

Each session usually lasts about an hour. The first meeting is devoted to assessing fitness level, body measurements, exercise and health history and goals. Be prepared to step on the scale, have your body fat tested and answer specific questions about your goals. After that, you'll spend each session doing cardio, weight training, flexibility or other activities depending on what your goals are. Your trainer will show you how to do the exercises, help you figure out how much weight to use and give you pointers for getting the most out of each exercise.

Staying Fit During Cancer

Living with cancers, such as mesothelioma or lung cancer, can be a very difficult and hard process that many people need all help and support they can get, to really help them through this tough time in there lives. Being strong and positive is one of the best ways to survive and one of the best ways to stay strong and healthy during cancer, is to stay fit. The benefits of fitness and helping to treat and live with cancer have been noted by a wide variety of sources.

For example, The Cancer Treatment Centers of America has stated, "Exercise-even minimal physical exertion-increases heart rate and muscle flexion, while boosting your body's tolerance to conventional bone care treatments such as chemotherapy." They are speaking specifically of bone cancer but this benefit should be available to all patients that are suffering from cancer.

Another major benefit is that it increases your health and helps you live longer and stronger. Obesity has been linked to increased risk of cancer, cancer death and recurrence after treatment. Staying fit helps keep you thinner, stronger and healthier. This helps increase your generalized life span after you have beat cancer.

A healthier body is more likely to be able to eliminate a recurrence of your cancer. Dr. Kerry Courneya of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, states , "Several recent studies suggest that higher levels of physical activity are associated with a reduced risk of the cancer coming back, and a longer survival after a cancer diagnosis."

Improved mental health is another link to increased fitness and cancer. People who exercise during cancer are taking control of their lives and eliminating the demand cancer places on the mind. Exercise endorphins will also help increase their mood, boost their self confidence and help reduce fatigue. Fatigue can make a person feel weak so eliminating this as much as possible can help a cancer patient feel stronger and happier.

These benefits can begin as quickly as 8 to 12 weeks after you begin exercising. A study done by doctor Matthew Buman of Standford University found that patients that included vitality boosting exercises into their life during treatment and increased fitness, vitality, perceived stress and fatigue. They found that sustaining this activity preserved the improvements for the entire length of the year based study.

Here at Team Fitness, training with Cancer patients is nothing new to our trainers. It is our passion and drive for the health of others, that gives us the energy, dedication and commitment to help our clients improve their health and to change their lives for the better.

Whatever we do, our clients health is our number one priority. We also believe the full Team Fitness spectrum approach ensures the best and complete personal training package for everyone.

Feel better, Look better, live better

Fitness during your treatments may seem difficult to start, due your pain and stress. Please talk to your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

What really is a challenge?

Some say a challenge is a call of engagement, a contest among men and women for a true test of power and glory. A challenge can be defined by a duel, a fight for passion and success or a simple test or competition with others.

You are the challenge!

You are the one who decides whether you win or lose, whether you take part or watch from the side lines, whether you succeed or whether you fail. So what is a good fitness Challenge you ask?

Well that’s for you to decide remember? A real challenge can only exist of the mind of the individual. But there is help! Team Fitness has a challenge for every goal and every need, big or small.
Taking the Team Fitness challenge is not about the competition, it’s about succeeding in what you believe in, yourself!

The Team Fitness 90 day challenge is a specialized program designed to retrain you and your body to burn fat more efficiently. It is an educational program that helps you understand how your body works and gives you state of the art tools and support tools to make that change happen.

We are not simply a diet. You could lose 50 pounds today by cutting off your or arm or your leg, but that would be about as bad a choice as going on a highly restrictive diet that you can’t maintain for a lifetime. Healthy people eat every day. They enjoy the foods they eat and their bodies and pallets are satisfied. Just as you can’t put water in the tank of your car and expect it to run the way you want, there are foods that you need to reduce in order for your body to become a fat burning machine.

Instead of telling you what to eat and not to eat, the 90 day challenge program explains “why” to replace certain foods with ones that create the metabolic change everyone wants. Be assured, we are not going to tell you that you have to be a vegetarian. But you need to understand how your body reacts to certain foods and take control and train your body to work for you and not against you. The human body is a miracle, what you do with it is up to you.

Get educated and take our challenge today!

It’s official, February, the month of love has finally arrived. February is the month when some of us celebrate Valentine’s Day, by the giving of candy, flowers and much more.

And here at team Fitness we also believe in sharing the love, by simply sharing the cost of personal training with your partners or loved ones.

Here is our Team Fitness guide to loving yourself and your partners this February.

1. Love yourself by committing to a fitness regimen. I have yet to fully commit to a fitness regimen, but the month of love is a time when I will commit. Love yourself by toning up & getting fit.

2. Seal the deal with your health goals. Your health goals are more reachable now than ever before. Determination and seeing yourself achieving your health goals are important. Once you can see yourself reaching your goals, then the next thing for you to do is to “just do it!”

3. Maintain healthy relationships with family and friends. Let’s face it, we all have relationships, some are good and some are not so good. Give your family and friends what you want. Be it kindness, time, love, or whatever. Just like personal training, you’ll find that you get what you put out. So why not treat a friend or family member to getting fit and healthier in the month of love.

Make the month of love a month of healthy beginnings in all areas of your life and let Team fitness guide you every step of the way.
